History & Background of Allendale
Allendale was establish in September 1855 by two brothers, Joel and William C. Allen and was originally named Allenville. Upon learning that another Allenville already existed the name was changed to Allendale.
Allendale is located in the northeast corner of Worth County and rests on a level plane that rises gradually from the Grand River, a mile to the west. Mineral springs were utilized as a health spa in Allendale in the 1880's.
The first business in town was a saloon owned by james Conrad and the Allen brothers opened the first store. The first school was a log cabin built in 1856. The cabin burned in 1869 and a two-story frame building was built at the cost of $2,500.
Allendale currently has a population of 54 with a very active Community Betterment Club. They recently finished work on a new sewer system and a new warning siren system. They host a rodeo every year as well as a July 4th Breakfast. They have built a new community hall.
In 2005, Allendale celebrated their sesquicentennial (150 years) celebration. Several thousand people came to the celebration. It was a week-end long party with pageants, concerts, fireworks, and a two hour long parade with over 800 parade participants.
One of Worth County's smallest communities, but is known for being very progressive. The people of Allendale are a model to others to reflect teamwork and create a great community to live in.
